God's Trombones

ABOUT THE SHOW
As an ode to the importance of the African American church tradition, James Weldon Johnson’s iconic collection of sermons, “God’s Trombones” will close out Season 11: Redemption Song. Presented as a theatrical work that exalts the role of folk preacher to that of epic storyteller, this Gospel production will use musical interludes to trace the spiritual roots of Jazz, Blues, Funk and Rock n’ Roll. To retell these folk sermons to a new generation, OnQ Founder & Artistic director, Quentin Talley, will team up with Billboard Charts History Maker and Founder & Artistic Director of Inspire The Fire, Dennis Reed Jr. In honor of Black Music Month, join us on a musical journey of Black Americans contributions to the tapestry of American History and a powerful tribute to our voice to affect change. Like the brass instrument, as James Weldon Johnson’s described, God’s Trombones “is a testament to the range and sound of the human voice.”
* Trombone: A powerful brass instrument of the trumpet family, the only wind instrument possessing a complete chromatic scale enharmonically true, like the human voice or the violin, and hence very valuable in the orchestra.
